1.
A heart that's full up like a landfill A job that slowly kills you Bruises that won't heal You look so tired, unhappy Bring down the government They don't, they don't speak for us I'll take a quiet life A handshake of carbon monoxide And no alarms and no surprises No alarms and no surprises No alarms and no surprises Silent This is my final fit My final bellyache With no alarms and no surprises No alarms and no surprises No alarms and no surprises, please Such a pretty house And such a pretty garden No alarms and no surprises
2.
I make my home down in the valley I never made it to the hill I shine my light out in the alley I am the only one who will I guess I've always been a traveler I do my church out in the street I'll use the jacket off my back as my tithe As I give it to the beggar who's in need All my friends are sick and wounded We don't have nothing left to give But we dance like David, Love like Jacob Keep on walking like Moses did. When were you naked or in prison? When did you need something to eat? You said whatever you have done unto the least of these My brother who you have done it unto me.

The only thing that I truly own is this heart inside my chest And so I like to keep it locked and hidden underneath my vest 'Cause I been hurt before. Don't you leave me in Chicago. What did you come here for if you won't be here tomorrow? I know my voice is quiet baby but my heart is so loud. So many things that I want to say but you know they won't come out 'Cause I been hurt before. Don't you leave me in Chicago. Tell me what did you come here for if you won't be here tomorrow? I went down to the waterfront docks where we walked the night we met Went to our usual meeting spot and I found the note you left Then I watched the dark clouds roll in and swallow up Lake Michigan And I rode that storm back home. I'm gonna sit in my sorrow until I write a song or two. I'm gonna sit in silence until I can finally hear the truth. 'Cause I been hurt before. Why'd you leave me in Chicago? Baby what did you come here for if you won't be here tomorrow? I went down to the waterfront docks where we walked the night we met. A distant thunder from far off so I turned to face the wind Then I watched the dark clouds roll in and swallow up Lake Michigan And I rode that storm back home.

We've been in the rain We've been on the mountain We've been 'round the fire In fancy hotels Drank water from farm wells We sang with the choir I kissed your dry lips We jumped off the high cliffs And splashed down below Skin to skin In the salty river Made love in the shadows Woooah ooh Read books to each other Read the mind of the other Flew 1, 000 jets We laughed and we cried At movies and real life And our ridiculous bets We danced in the moonlight at midnight We pressed against back doors and wood floors And you never faked it Infrequently We ignored our love But we could never mistake it Oooh ooh We met on the front porch Fell in love on the phone Without the physical wreck You gave me the necklace That used to hang Around your mother's neck We questioned religions Gave bread to the pigeons We learned how to pray We stood by the ocean Turned our hearts into one We layed in bed all day Heeey We skipped on the sidewalk Skipped stones on the water Skipped town We've seen the sunrise with new eyes We've seen the damage of gossip and true lies We've seen the sun go down Had passionate make outs And passionate freak outs We built this world of our own It was in the back of a taxi When you told me you loved me And that I wasn't alone

The wind is blowing cold tonight, And the streets are awfully wet. I ducked beneath a neon sign and Through the door I went. I fell in love a long time ago With a girl who don't know my name, So if I don't know much about love Then I guess I'm the one we should blame. I had a enough cash for a stiff drink, Just something to warm up my bones. I been all around and I'm lonely. I know what I'm missing and I miss it all. I fell in love a long time ago But I let my pride get in the way So if I don't know much about love Then I guess I'm the one we should blame. The dancing girls twirl in the red light. They look better from farther away. The bartender gives the last call for the night And soon I'm back out in the rain. I fell in love like never before And Elenore was the girl's name. But I left her crying, I don't know what for But I guess I'm the one we should blame.

When everything's said and done I leave you with love. When everything's going wrong choose love. And when they've gone to far, they make you question who you are. When it wrecks you on in the inside. Everybody knows There are times when it's so hard To choose love. I know I cannot stay forever And when my songs have all been sung. I hope I've given all I have to you. To show you how it's done. They may try to take your everything But they can't take your love. And it might blow up in your face one day, But just love. And when you feel that it might break you Or literally kill you, When nobody would blame you For giving up the fight There's only one thing that lasts forever. One thing that never dies. There's only one way to cast out darkness And that's to shine a light
