Everything Has Beauty
04:45
|

Well my grandpa still remembers
When that pole went in the ground.
That was the day they strung together
Everything in town.
And all these obsolete wires you still see
Just hanging in the air,
They were the mayor's rosary necklace,
And every factory was a prayer.
Oh I know everything still has some beauty in it.
Oh I don't know if anybody here can even see it.
Or maybe it just doesn't matter.
Is it odd that I find comfort in
Chipped paint and broken glass?
Crumbling architecture,
Forgotten pieces of the past.
So let the nights get cold. Let the walkways crack.
Let the weeds poke through the ground.
They're only begging for a chance to prove
That they can make it in this town.
Oh I know everything still has some beauty in it.
Oh I don't know if anybody here can even see it.
Or maybe it just doesn't matter.
I won't forget about you when I'm gone
And I've put every little bit of myself in these songs
So you can sit in the moonlight and put my records on.
Though I'm thankful for the people
And the places I have known,
This old highway is my Polaris
And it will always guide me home.
So let the nights get cold. Let the walkways crack.
Let the weeds poke through the ground.
You'll find me begging for a chance to prove
That I can make it this town.

Bones
03:27

Now that I'm in love
I don't care about the money.
So I quit my job.
The modern world's got nothing for me.
Anonymity is what I seek.
I'm just another body milling in the street.
Where did I go wrong?
I said "I don't care about the money."
You're mother sat me down
She said I can't see you again.
So I waited 'round
Went to the back door and snuck in.
You didn't offer hope, no
You were coy and double-throated Oh
Where did I go wrong?
When can I see you again?
You feel it deep in your heart.
I feel it deep in my pocket.
You feel it deep in your heart.
I feel it deep in my...
Bones.

Sacred & Profane
04:36
|
|||
I tend to be where the light and darkness meet
On the edge of the horizon through the trees.
I am a narcissist crippled with self doubt.
I’ve got a courage that brings me to my knees.
And I am equal parts sacred & profane.
I live my life that way.
I live my life that way.
I go to parties full of everyone I love
So I can slip out the back door and be alone.
I fight with angels ’til I’m too beat up to walk
And then I hold on tight and will not let them go.
And I am equal parts sacred & profane.
I live my life that way.
I live my life that way.
I am equal parts of Abel & of Cain
I live my life that way.
I live my life that way.
I am a generous swindler; an honest man who lies.
It is my human nature. (That’s a hell of an alibi you got kid.)
I read a story once about a white washed tomb
And I’ve been thinkin’ about that story ever since you left the room.
A generous swindler. An honest man who lies.
I’ve got a fear of failure that keeps me up at night.
I read a story once about an empty tomb
But I’ve been tryin’ to pay this debt off ever since I left the womb.

I Broke Free
03:40
|
|||
Let me lay it on the line.
This all got started with a slip of the tongue.
The world was so much older then,
When you and I were young.
The sunset was a ragged red.
Two poets started arguing again.
Conceding mathematicians undo everything
As the table starts to spin.
You said in order to be an artist
You must love chaos. I disagreed.
You knew no honor. Your art was lawlessness.
You tried to take me in but I broke free.
Let me explain it the best I can.
If things look brutal you are looking from behind.
The rocks and trees we think we know so well,
They all have faces that they hide.
What was whispered in the basement,
I'm gonna sing it from the roof.
Nothing hidden will remain unknown.
The light will shine in every corner of the room.
You said in order to be an artist
You must love chaos. I disagreed.
You knew no honor. Your art was lawlessness.
You tried to take me in but I broke free.

Looking For God
04:05
|
|||
You might say I did it my way.
You might say I did it wrong.
You might say I stumbled through my life
And beat my brains with alcohol.
I found my alter on a bar stool
And that was where I aimed to stay.
I drank my whiskey all night long
And slept it off all day.
You might say that I'm a lover.
You might say that I'm no good.
I beat the door down at every brothel
And I took everything I could.
But for everything I took myself
I gave something away.
I wouldn't know true love now
If it slapped me in the face.
I was looking for God.
I was looking for God.
There's a life that I can't remember.
There's a way that I'm supposed to be.
There's a fire burned down to the ember.
There's a light that no one can see.
There's a song you can't hear through the static.
There's a radio silent in code
There's an old guitar in the attic
There's a young man growing old.

How It's Done
03:35
|
|||
When everything's said and done
I leave you with love.
When everything's going wrong
choose love.
And when they've gone to far, they make you question who you are.
When it wrecks you on in the inside. Everybody knows
There are times when it's so hard
To choose love.
I know I cannot stay forever
And when my songs have all been sung.
I hope I've given all I have to you.
To show you how it's done.
They may try to take your everything
But they can't take your love.
And it might blow up in your face one day,
But just love.
And when you feel that it might break you
Or literally kill you,
When nobody would blame you
For giving up the fight
There's only one thing that lasts forever.
One thing that never dies.
There's only one way to cast out darkness
And that's to shine a light
